Editorial review:

Formerly called the Grand Hotel de Pekin, the hotel Raffles Beijing Hotel has a proud history dating back to 1900. It is situated on the boundary of Wangfujing Dajie and is a good location. The rooms are elegant and the service is friendly. There is a fine selection of Chinese and international dining options, including East 33 (--6526 3388 ext 5172) where the Chinese ambience is smart and modern.

Verified Reviews:

  • Breakfast was excellent - Huge shower - Flat screen tv
  • Rooms are comfortable - Air conditioner broken - Great service

John Spooner, the guest liaison manager (I think) was absolutely fantastic! All his sightseeing, shopping and dining recommendations were great and he was very aware of our special needs (we were travelling with a 2yo boy). John just got things done, and with a smile. Rooms were spacious and tastefully decorated. The location is unbeatable - close to the Forbidden City/Tiananmen Square on one side and Wangfujing shopping on the other side. Overall a good place to stay.

The rooms were sadly not as quiet as hoped - the windows need to be double- glazed! Swimming pool was a bit strange. The hotel staff are pleasant and well-intentioned but generally not great at reading situations. For example, we arrived at night, visibly frazzled after a long, difficult day of travel with a very ratty 2yo, but the concierge insisted on taking us on a long and wordy tour of all of the hotel facilities on the way, even though we repeatedly said "Please just take us to our rooms!" Another staff member woke us with a call at 11:45pm to tell us they couldn't find our laundry...I Said actually, I hadn't given them any laundry so they must have called the wrong room, but they didn't apologise for the mistake. Definitely room for improvement.

Location is excellent, personalized check in operations, excellent staff.

East 33 Cafe buffet not up to expectations, meat choice really poor, no corn flakes at breakfast, expensive. Really surprising that such level hotel could not provide bathroom amenities that any 3-4 stars Chinese hotel is regularly offering to his guests and torn towels are absolutely unacceptable from Raffles Hotel , no iron facilities in the room

  • Single

Staff were very welcoming and friendly, made me feel important.

The shower rose, whilst looking quite impressive it did not perform well rendering the shower below par.

  • Older travelers

The location of the hotel is fantastic. You are within walking distance to Tian'anmen, the forbidden city and Wangfujing. The nearest subway station is less than a 5 minute walk away from the entrance of the hotel which makes it very accesible to the other parts of Beijing through the subway system. The staff at the hotel, especially the bellboys, are very friendly and helpful. English is also not a problem with hotel staff. Rooms are perfect with more than sufficient space to move around (Landmark Room).

There is a slight difficulty in getting a taxi from the hotel entrance due to the reason that the hotel is located along Chang An Avenue and taxis are not allowed to stop along this street. If you need a taxi urgently, you will need to inform the hotel staff at least 15 mins beforehand, unless you are lucky and a taxi drops of a guest. Alternatively, you could walk to Wangfujing to get a cab, but be wary of those which are stationary as you might get fleeced. The other thing which I feel could have been improved are the anemities provided in the room. We had to ask houskeeping for basic items such as cotton buds, facial pads, shoe polish kit, etc. The reason given by the hotel was that these items were not provided due to "Environmental Protecion Reasons". These items should be provided given the brand name of the hotel without the need for the guest to ask for it. Other than the two items mentioned above, I would defintely choose this hotel again and would also recommend it if you are ever in Beijing for business or pleasure.

  • Older travelers

The hospitality I received was just amazing.... thanks to raffles ambassador, front desk and the concierge as overall I thank the whole group of rafffles beijing. and last is communication in raffles was not a problem.

  • Couple

The true attentiveness of the complete staff. Very welcome and friendly, even a sense of humor.

  • Group of friends

it is a great property - full of history but still up-to-date and deluxe service features. we all just loved it.

poor English of the staff - but this is the same problem throughout China

  • Single

Attentive staff and very spacious room

Minibar is very expensive as usual

  • Couple

Location is excellent - walking distance to Forbidden City & Tiananmen Square

Check-in was not very friendly. We arrived at 9am after a 24hr flight and were told we would have to pay a half days fee to access the room early. Check-in is 12, so it was only 3 hrs early and the hotel was all but empty! Not a good start to the holiday.

  • Older travelers

It is a beautiful hotel in a lovely old building. The rooms were spacious and very comfortable and the service was excellent.

The prices in the mini bar and the restaurant were expensive

  • Group of friends

The Raffles was really at a fabulous location, with easy access to most of the attractions we were interested in, plus upscale shopping. The lobby is gorgeous, the rooms clean, and on check-in they were eager to offer us a two-person package, though we were staying in two different rooms. It included breakfast (the buffet is quite nice), free pressing (two items a day), cocktails and nibbles every evening, and free soft drinks from the mini bar, plus a 15% discount at any restaurants. The bed was wonderful, and Internet was free and worked well.

The rooms, while spacious and comfortable, were decorated in an odd, 1950s fake French style. I would rather the room feel more like Beijing, rather than Marilyn Monroe's boudoir... The staff were helpful, but under the surface I felt that they were rather impatient and agressive. Having said that, I live in Japan, where service is gracious to the nth degree. The package was nice, but a little confusing to manage across two rooms; the executive lounge staff didn't believe we had that kind of arrangement, and there were a couple small errors in our bill on check-out.

  • Older travelers

The Beijing Raffles is up to the reputation of the raffles chain

  • Single

    Its location, courteous staff

The room was very cold as it was not possible to turn off the air conditioning.

  • Single

Perfect location for those who want to do a lot of city exploration. Also convenient for Beijing Opera. I love the history that stands behind, and the way the embassador manages to gently introduce you to that if you are not aware. The spa is good as well.

One can still feel a bit of "soviet" legacy about the hotel - which might be inevitable given that it's a historical building. What I found a bit inconvenient was that water taps were not exactly well mixing the water so you ended up having streams of hot and cold water at the same time.

  • Single

Very well located, I enjoyed the service provided by the staff members, flexibility in payment, and concierge services when organizing trips to the Great Wall or other destinations in the outskirts of Beijing. Rooms were very spacious and comfortable.
